Celebrate release of final 'Twilight' book with midnight masquerade and more
01:11 PM CDT on Friday, August 1, 2008
Fans of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight book series have been counting down the days until the release of the fourth and final installment, Breaking Dawn.
Area bookstores are eagerly awaiting it, too, with many opening their doors for themed release parties full of games, contests and anticipation about what the latest vampire-and-werewolf novel will bring to the saga's two star-crossed lovers.
As of early this afternoon, few stores had seen anyone line up for the book’s midnight release.
"For the last several months we’ve been taking reservations, so it’s not a question of ‘oh no, I won't get my book,'" said Carlo Rich, event/marketing manager for Borders stores in Dallas. Each local Borders store has ordered several hundred copies, Mr. Rich said, noting that he expects plenty of fans to show up at tonight’s "Twilight Til Dawn" party.
"It should be really fun. I mean, it's the closest thing to Harry Potter", he said. "I wouldn't go as far as to say it’s as big as Harry Potter, but it’s by far the next closest thing."
Stores can't begin selling the book (list price $22.99) until 12:01 a.m. Saturday. To keep checkout lines orderly, some will distribute wristbands or tickets.
Here's a rundown of plans. All of these parties are Friday, and all are free. For late-breaking news about other release parties, check our Texas Pages books blog.

Staff Writer Mallary Tenore contributed to this report.
For those who have (somehow) missed the buzz about the Twilight Saga teen-lit phenomenon, there is still time to catch up on the story of forbidden love between the shy Bella and Edward the vampire.
Since the release of the first book, Twilight, in 2005, the series by Stephenie Meyer has grown tremendously in popularity. All three novels so far (Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse ) have been New York Times best-sellers, and Eclipse knocked Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows out of the No. 1 spot last summer.
When Ms. Meyer began the series, she says, it was nothing more than a story for herself. Three years later, the final Twilight Saga novel is set to be released, but she's already working on Midnight Sun, which will tell the story from Edward's perspective.
